How to become a UGC creator in the US

You don't need followers, a studio or an agent to become a UGC creator. You need a phone, a few strong spec videos and a way to reach brands that pay. This guide walks through each step.

Step 1. Pick two or three niches

Brands hire creators who look and sound like their customers. Start with two or three niches you genuinely know: products you use, hobbies you have, problems you've solved. A parent filming baby products, a runner filming fitness gear and a developer filming software tools all have a natural edge in their niche.

Fewer niches beat a long list. They make your portfolio coherent and raise your match score when you apply to campaigns.

Step 2. Set up simple gear

A recent smartphone is enough. Add three things if you can:

  • Light. A window during the day or one ring light.
  • Sound. A quiet room, or a small clip on microphone.
  • Stability. A tripod or phone stand for hands free demos.

Film vertical, in 1080p or better, against a clean background that suits the product.

Step 3. Film a small portfolio of spec videos

Brands decide based on your videos, so make three to six of them before you apply anywhere. Use products you already own and film the formats brands buy most:

  • A testimonial, 20 to 30 seconds, talking about a real problem and how the product helped.
  • An unboxing with an honest first reaction.
  • A demo showing the product in use.

Put your best hook in the first three seconds of each video. Keep edits clean and captions readable. Don't use other brands' logos in ways that suggest they hired you.

Step 4. Set your rates

Public 2026 rate guides put a typical US UGC video at about $175, and bundles of five or more at about $162 per video. Beginners often start lower and raise their rates after a few completed campaigns. Always price the usage rights: paid ad rights for 12 months, whitelisting and raw footage are worth more than organic use. Our guide to UGC creator rates in the USA goes deeper.

Step 5. Find paid campaigns

Cold pitching brands works, but it is slow and payment is never guaranteed. A UGC jobs board flips that: brands post campaigns, and you apply to the ones that fit. On UgcBoard, every campaign is funded in escrow before it goes live, so you only apply to work that can pay.

When you apply, answer the brief in two sentences: who you are and how you'd film this product. Read what brands check in a UGC creator application before your first one.

Step 6. Handle the business side

  • Read the agreement. Check the deliverables, usage rights, deadlines and revision rounds.
  • Keep deadlines. Late delivery is the fastest way to lose repeat work.
  • Handle revisions inside the brief, and politely decline requests that go beyond it.
  • Taxes. In the US, platforms usually ask for a W-9 and issue a 1099 where it applies. Keep records of your income and costs.

Step 7. Grow your rates and repeat brands

After each campaign, add the best result to your portfolio. Raise your rates when you're booked out. Over time, focus on the niches and formats that bring the best payouts and the most repeat brands.

Start applying to funded campaigns

Create your profile, verify that you're 18 or older and apply to UGC jobs with the payout already in escrow.
